Meandering the Midlands cycle tour

This fully inclusive 3 day cycle tour takes you through the quiet country roads of the charming Kwazulu-Natal Midlands countryside. Following carefully selected sections within the Midlands Meander route, this cycle tour combines adventure with some unique cultural "off the bike" experiences. Known for its historical landmarks, decadent restaurants, pristine natural heritage, and artistic, hospitable people there is ample opportunity to explore, relax, discover, create and be inspired.

Some of the tour highlights include a tour of the World-Famous Nelson Mandela capture site, a glorious morning exploring the unique ecology of a pristine Mist-Belt forest, craft beer and cheese tastings and visit to some of the most well preserved San rock art painting in the Ukhalamba-Drakensberg World Heritage site.

Midlands Tours can be arranged on request.

Minimum number for a supported tour is 8 people although self-supported tours can be arranged for fewer numbers.

Karkloof falls to falls slack-packing trail

The Karkloof Falls2Falls 3-day slack-packing hike is an all-inclusive trek encompassing some of the most picturesque and hidden parts of the Midlands countryside. From indigenous mist-belt forest, to pristine grasslands, pastoral vistas and eye watering panoramic views, the ever-changing scenery contains something for everyone.

Highlights include traversing the forest canopy on a zip line tour, a visit to a world class
bird hide with the chance to spot the critically-endangered Wattled Crane, and an indigenous tree
trail with abundant wildlife including various birds, antelope, zebra, wildebeest and other game.

The Samango Dargle slack-packing trail

This is a 3-day round hike encompassing curated paths through one of the oldest and most well protected nature conservancies in the Midlands. Working closely with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s (EKZNW) Biodiversity Stewardship Program, 20 landowners from the Dargle and Lidgetton Valleys have partnered together to establish a provincial nature reserve. This ensures better custodianship over a rich biodiversity of plants and animal that occurs in the indigenous forests and moist mist-belt grass lands that the hike traverses. Conservation centered eco-tourism is one of the core focuses of Spekboom Tours, and as such, 10% of all proceeds are donated to the Dargle conservancy for their ongoing projects in the area.

The daily hikes are gentle in distance and gradient making this trek perfect for beginners, families, and for those less experienced and fit. Comfortable accommodation at cosy country lodges with locally grown, home cooked meals is an added bonus. In the summer, there are rivers and dams to swim in and plenty of picturesque picnic spots on route.

Midlands hike & bike

For those who prefer a mix of hiking and biking, we have the perfect 3-day blended tour to explore the best of both. After staying the night in one of a selection of comfortable accommodation venues nestled in the heart of the midlands misty forests, the first day is spent hiking a network of forested paths affording spectacular views over the midlands. The following day we will take to two wheels, experiencing the best trails of the midlands by bicycle. For the technically inclined, we have a selection of challenging single track but for those who simply want to enjoy the countryside, there are the blissfully quiet country roads with circular routes from 20 to 60km in distance. The last day of the tour includes a 10-15km hike with interesting and varied scenery. The hike is certain to dispel any illusions of the Midlands as consisting of only farmland!

Depending on your preferences, time, and fitness level, we can tailor a tour to suit your specific needs. As a tour embedded in the Midlands Meander ethos, we also offer a number of historical, cultural and culinary experiences. This can include amongst others, craft beer tasting, cheese and wine tours, Mandela Capture site tours, horseplay sessions and art workshops. A stop-over at one of the many craft workshops, studios and restaurant is a “must do”.

Battlefields cycle tour

This unique 9-day tour offers a carefully selected range of activities from scenic rides and pampered safaris to vivid stories of epic battles steeped in local history. Using quiet country roads with very manageable daily cycling distances, we will explore some of the landmark battles of Ladysmith, Spioenkop, Isandlawana, Rorke’s Drift, Talana Hill and Elangslaagte.  A luxury mid-trip stay at the big-five private reserve of Nambiti offers a refreshing rest stop and chance to experience one of South Africa’s premier game reserves. Our informative and entertaining tour guide is skilled in bringing the stories of the area to life, and will ensure a unique and enlightening experience for all.
